“I may be old, but I’m not yet done…”

Spring is kitten season, as many of us know.  And who can resist those cute cuddly balls of fluff? There are no human lips that can resist turning into a smile at the sight of kittens wrestling, purring, and napping in your arms.

At Karma Cat we love kittens, and we also see the beauty in our middle-aged and senior cats. There is a way they carry themselves, sometimes with a little hitch in their git along because of arthritis, but with a confident sense of who they are and what they want. They have earned the respect they seek, as well as a warm spot in the sun and loving hands to scratch their old bones when they want it.

Have you ever wondered WHY anyone would adopt an older cat?  Well, here’s just a few of the many reasons.

OLDER CATS NEED LESS SUPERVISION

Older cats are more emotionally mature and are more independent. They know how to occupy themselves while you’re at work. They don’t need as much supervision as kittens do, and they are less likely to get into “trouble” like kittens typically do.

THEY CAUSE LESS MESS AND WANT TO SNUGGLE MORE

Adult cats are mature, and their play is calmer and not as hyperactive. Yes, believe not or not, play is still important for cats of any age.  Even older cats love chasing after that feather wand, or kicking at a catnip filled toy.  Even a calmer adult cat needs attention, exercise, and playtime. They just tend to be a little more mellow about it all.

YOU HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT

One of the things we’re especially proud of at KCZD is all of our volunteers that foster and socialize our cats.  By the time a cat is ready for adoption, we know so much about them – what they like, what their quirks are, their favorite food, whether they do well with kids, and what toys or games they like!

THEY MAKE FOR A PEACEFUL COMPANION

When you go to bed or when you’re relaxing on the couch after a long day (this reason is my personal favorite). Nothing beats the special peacefulness of a purring cat curled up next to you, binge watching Netflix.

ADULT CATS NEED A FOREVER HOME TOO

About 3.2 million cats enter shelters in the United States every year. Adopting an older cat from a shelter or rescue is a fantastic opportunity to give one a loving home. Middle aged and senior cats are notoriously overlooked in shelters and rescues, and we believe they deserve a warm sunny spot and a loving family to live out their golden years.

YOU MIGHT RELATE TO EACH OTHER

Sometimes, senior and middle-aged cats who need a new home have been through a lot. You might have been through a lot too. Sometimes adopting an older cat is healing because you can relate to each other. There’s nothing like coming home from a long day to see your new furry companion stretch, yawn, and come over to greet you by rubbing up against you and turning on their purr machine. You never have to go home to an empty house or be alone. Together, you can both put the past behind you and enjoy a future of love and adventure.
