Mission + Vision

The mission of the Karma Cat Rescue Society is to provide a safe and peaceful haven for homeless, abandoned or abused animals. We will help decrease the number of cats being destroyed in kill shelters through the work of our adoption, trap-neuter-return, and education programs.

The vision of the Karma Cat Rescue Society is a world where every companion animal is respected, fed, warm, happy, and not in danger of being killed because it is temporarily homeless.

Karma Cat Rescue Society, and all people associated with it, vow to treat all persons with respect and consideration – regardless of race or color; religion or creed; national origin, nationality, or ancestry; sex, pregnancy, or breastfeeding; sexual orientation; gender identity or expression; disability; marital status or domestic partnership/civil union status; and/or liability for military service.

Our Story

In 2010, sisters Christie and Michelle Arlotta formed Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society; an organization that puts a positive light on animal rescue efforts. They knew that they wanted to change the fate of homeless, abandoned, or abused animals, while offering them a safe and peaceful haven during the transition. In 2023, we re-evaluated our strengths along with community needs and rebranded ourselves Karma Cat Rescue Society so we can fully focus on what we do best: cats!

Through the help of our leadership and animal care volunteers, board members, donations, and grants, we are able to operate our adoption, trap-neuter-return, and education programs to further our mission. We are a volunteer-run, New Jersey-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit with an adoption center in Milltown. We host fun events every year to celebrate the organization’s accomplishments as well as raise much-needed funds to continue saving precious lives. Additionally, we are active on Facebook and Instagram – posting lots of fun content including all happy adoption stories!

We are not a religious organization and we mean no disrespect of any organization that identifies with the concept of karma or the study of zen.

Leadership

Traditional top-down organizational charts didn’t feel like the right fit for Karma Cat. Instead, we use what we call the Karma Cat Circle – a visual representation of how our organization actually operates, with Cats & Homes at the center of everything we do.

Rather than working in isolated departments, our teams are designed to overlap and support one another. Whether someone is involved in Medical, Cleaning, Marketing, Fostering, TNR, Adoptions, or Community Education, their work connects with and strengthens the work happening across the organization.

We are at our best when:

  • Communication is open. Information and observations are shared so the right people can respond quickly and thoughtfully. A volunteer noticing a change in a cat’s behavior or health can help ensure the right team members follow up.
  • Roles are flexible. Titles such as Director or Coordinator help provide structure and support, but they do not create barriers. Each layer of the circle supports the one inside it, and collaboration across teams is part of how we operate every day.
  • The mission stays at the center. Every person involved with Karma Cat – from our Board of Directors to our newest volunteer – is part of one connected community working toward the same goal: helping cats find safe, loving homes.
  • Curiosity and learning guide our work. We ask questions, seek root causes, and continually adjust our approach so we can improve how we care for cats and support the people who help them.

The takeaway: Karma Cat thrives because our volunteers and leaders work together across roles and programs, supporting one another to ensure cats receive the care they need and the homes they deserve.
