Introducing the 2016 Feline Fitness Challenge!

Pleasantly plump, chunky, hefty, portly or fluffy… whichever word you use, they all mean the same thing: fat cats and paunchy pooches!

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 58% of cats and 54% of dogs are considered overweight. To battle that steadily increasing number, there’s even an annual Pet Obesity Awareness Day (this year it’s on October 12).

No pet is perfect – even our Karma Cats are susceptible to the epidemic. Anisette came to us as a portly girl, and Little Silver has been indulging in a little too much kibble lately. One thing is for sure: these two ladies need some help slimming down and that’s where you, our loyal supporters, come into play during our 2016 Feline Fitness Challenge!

Here’s how the Challenge works:

  • Your Objective: Using the newly installed Petcube camera, we are asking you to help exercise our fat cats. We have two teams, Team Tortie (Anisette) vs. Team Tabby (Little Silver) – who will lose the most weight and come out on top as the fittest feline?
  • How to Help: Every day from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. our camera is live and available for you to play with the kitties using a built-in laser toy. Download the Petcube app to your smartphone, create an account (you don’t need a camera of your own for this step), follow our camera and start playing!
  • Why Should I Help? Playing with the cats is a big step towards them losing weight, especially since they both love chasing the laser! Check out their previous play videos below, and don’t forget to record your own session using the app and share it with us on Facebook!
  • Who Wins!? We will be doing periodic weigh-ins to mark each girl’s progress. The Challenge will run from July 1 to October 1, when a final weigh-in will take place. Don’t forget to join the 2016 Feline Fitness Challenge Facebook event page to see every update!

So how about it? Are you up for the challenge? Are you Team Tabby or Team Tortie?

Note: Excess weight on our pets is detrimental; it’s been shown to lead to diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, certain forms of cancer and an overall decreased life expectancy. Helping your pet shed weight is challenging, but you can find tips for your chunky canine here or your fluffy feline here.
